Gary Speed – RIP.

The news that filtered through on Twitter this morning seemed unbelievable. Gary Speed has passed away. A numbness and shock took hold, for someone I never knew.. It seems incomprehensible, the whole situation.

The days when he played for Leeds United were before I discovered football and despite never having the honour of seeing him in one of the greatest midfield’s the top flight has ever seen, for me, Gary Speed remained one of the all time greats of modern football.

Unassuming but kind, respected and respectful, Speed epitomised everything that a professional should be. He led by example on and off the pitch; when you think of how footballers can be loathed in the modern game, show me someone who can say something bad about Gary Speed.

Hearing the minutes silence at Swansea turn into applause brought tears.Football is truly united in mourning for Speed, club loyalties aside, it’s heartening to see fans coming together to pay tribute.

Rest In Peace Gary.
